Garage Door Makes A Lot Of Noise

Squeaky garage door or garage door grinding sound when opening or closing if you hear a garage door grinding noise it could be the rollers.

A loud garage door opener that makes a lot of noise is for some people a slight nuisance and for others a reason to wake up at night. Noise levels depend mostly on drive style gear assembly and operating speed. However if the noise continues another source of the popping noise you hear coming from your garage door could be because the torsion springs are broken.

It is not uncommon for old metal rollers to make a lot of noise as they roll up and down the metal track. The door track rollers move each time you open or close the door leading to a lot of movement and causing wear. Using a wrench and socket set to retighten these bolts and screws can potentially quiet the garage door almost completely. When inspecting the track ensure that you also check out the door rollers.

This hopefully will get rid of the noise when the door is opening and closing. If your garage door is making lots of noise during use you need to perform a visual inspection of all of the components in your garage door system. The garage door noise you are hearing may simply be due to the fact that the door and track supports have loose or missing track bolts and screws causing the door to rattle in its rails. If you have a track drive opener the next step is to lubricate the opener track with grease.

Does this need to be lubricated. So start by tightening the chain find the procedure in your owner s manual. Also the wheels on the track are a little louder than they were they used to be silent. This wear could damage the roller surface causing them not to roll correctly.

If your garage door is still making a lot of noise after making sure everything is tight cleaned and lubricated then your actual garage door opener may be the issue. A loose garage door opener chain makes loud slapping sounds and causes jerky door movements that smack the rollers against the track. The sounds seem to be a binding or tightening sound coming from the main spring. A typical five section garage door will require a dozen rollers.

Start with a visual inspection of the sections panels looking for any signs of dents bending creases or cracks in each panel. Sand and soil particles can be the reason why your garage door is noisy and not opening properly. Cleaning and removing the soil particles from the track will allow the door to open and close more smoothly.
